MaoZeDong once visiting the Great Wall let our a saying that is used now in China often, “You are not a man until you step on the Great Wall.”

It’s an idiom I use often worldwide.  “Have you been to the Great Wall, oh, well am I the only man in the room?”  So, have you been to the Great Wall?

Getting out of the city every now and then from the hustle and bustle of Beijing sets you free.  The second you clear the 5th ring road and near closer to the unknown 6th ring the skies clear up and adventure sets in.  And it’s essential for everyone to visit the Great Wall at least once, I mean come on, it’s the only wall that is viewable from space!  And guess what, it’s just outside of Beijing!

Now that you have made up your mind and you are hell bent on going to the Great Wall and become a real man no matter the circumstances you are met with a time challenge and start to think, which part to go to?  Oh, yeah, that’s right, this wall is not alike a normal wall, it’s 5,500 miles long stretching across China.  So which part to visit?

The Great Wall stretches over mountains, literally mountain top cliffs, deserts, oceans, cliffs, valleys, countryside, grasslands and all of China.  Now construction started some thousand years ago, so it’s not all in the best shape.  Some parts have been built up to Disney land status with camel rides up and slide rides down.

Other parts are the wild Great Wall, that are in disarray climbing over mountain tops and for only the Indian Jones types.

Near Beijing you have a wide selection of choices with many in the mountain region.  Last weekend I took a group up to the half rebuilt section with parts of wild Great Wall connecting to Simatai, this area is call Jing Shan Ling, one of the better sections of the Great Wall.

On first entrance the area is safe and completely rebuilt towers and all.  Spectacular scenes of the countryside lay beneath you making it hard to believe this is only a few hours drive from Beijing.

How to get there?  Luckily there are tour operators offering tours in the summer.  For off season times, best is to rent a car from www.zhuche.com get a GPS and plug in JinShanLing, it’s how I got there and it’s about 1 1/2 hours from the city.
